Your fast pitch bat is your most important piece of equipment if you are to be successful in fast pitch softball. Bats in fast pitch softball come in various sizes and can be made of wood, metal or high tech composites.

Fastpitch Bat Construction

A softball bat fast pitch can come in different sizes and weights because not all players are the same size. Bats are usually manufactured of aluminum which allows for a lighter weight and an increased hitting power. The lower the weight of the bat the more speed and power can be placed behind a swing to hit the ball harder and further. To decrease the weight of a bat and the vibration felt when contact with the ball, a variety of aluminum alloys in combination with copper, zinc, aluminum and magnesium, graphite and titanium are used.

A fast pitch softball bat can be no more than 34 inches long and 2 1/4 inches in diameter. Also, a “drop” of no more than 12 is allowed. The drop refers to the difference between length and weight. It is calculated by taking the length of the bat in inches and subtracting the weight in ounces. For instance, if a bat is 34” inches long and weighs 30 ounces, its drop is -4. The drop will change depending on the level of skill.

Most of the top end fastpitch softball composite bats are made from high technology composite materials like Kevlar and carbon fiber combined with aluminum. All softball bats must have an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) approved stamp with a Bat Performance Factor (BFP) rating of 1.20 on them and be included in a list of approved bats models published by ASA national office. Such rating is used to compare the performance of one bat to another.
